Chapter 1. Cryostat migration overview

As a cluster administrator in Red Hat OpenShift, you can upgrade from Cryostat 3.0 to Cryostat 4.0. This guide covers the migration process for the Cryostat 4.0 release and any required application configuration updates to maintain consistent behavior.

Before you begin the migration process, complete the following steps:

1.1. Migration recommendations

Before migrating, consider backing up any Cryostat data to ensure that customizations can be restored after upgrading.

This data includes:

  • Custom event templates
  • Custom dashboard layouts
  • Active and archived recordings
  • Custom automated rules

    Note

Because of database management differences between Cryostat versions 3.0 and 4.0, any automated rules that you created in Cryostat 3.0 will not be automatically available after you upgrade. Before you upgrade, ensure that you download any existing rules that you want to continue using. For more information about downloading automated rules, see Creating an automated rule definition.

If there are previous SSL certificates and stored credentials configurations, ensure that these are available during migration.

1.2. Application configuration changes

As part of a new feature in the Red Hat build of Cryostat 4.0 release, you can use the Cryostat Operator to configure the Cryostat agent automatically. For more information about this new automatic configuration feature, see Cryostat agent features: Automatic or manual configuration of the Cryostat agent in the Getting started with Cryostat guide.

Due to a known issue that Red Hat is currently investigating, manual configuration of the Cryostat agent does not work correctly in Cryostat 4.0. Red Hat plans to fix this issue in a future release. If you want your applications to use the Cryostat agent in the 4.0 release, you must allow the Cryostat Operator to configure the Cryostat agent automatically. For more information, see Enabling automatic configuration of the agent by the Cryostat Operator.
