Chapter 1. Introduction to Red Hat Edge Manager

Red Hat Edge Manager aims to provide simple, scalable, and secure management of edge devices and applications. Users declare the operating system version, host configuration, and set of applications they want to run on an individual device or a whole fleet of devices, and Red Hat Edge Manager will roll out the target configuration to devices where a device agent will automatically apply them and report progress and health status back up.

Red Hat Edge Manager is designed for modern, container-centric toolchains and operational best practices. It works best on image-based Linux operating systems running bootc and with container workloads running on Podman (quadlet or single-container) or Kubernetes-style workloads on MicroShift (including Helm charts). Red Hat Edge Manager supports both rootless and privileged application execution, with workload user separation so you can run applications with minimal privileges by default and elevate only when necessary.
