Chapter 4. New Features

This section highlights some of the new features offered by Red Hat Container Development Kit 3.8. The new version also contains a number of bug fixes.

Red Hat Container Development Kit 3.8 contains the Minishift tool, a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 ISO, and the oc (OpenShift client) binary for interacting with OpenShift Container Platform.

4.1. Minishift

Red Hat Container Development Kit 3.8 is based on Minishift, a command line tool to provision OpenShift locally for application developers. It supports all native hypervisors and some additional ones:

macOS
Linux
Windows

4.2. New Features

  • Container Development Kit now includes a prerequisite installer for the macOS and Microsoft Windows operating systems. To install prerequisites, use the following command: 

    $ minishift setup
    Copy to Clipboard Toggle word wrap
    Note

    You must run minishift setup-cdk before running the minishift setup command.

  • Container Development Kit now supports starting and stopping the system tray without starting the OpenShift Container Platform cluster. To start the system tray, run the following command: 

    $ minishift service start systemtray
    Copy to Clipboard Toggle word wrap

    To stop the system tray, run the following command: 

    $ minishift service stop systemtray
    Copy to Clipboard Toggle word wrap
