Chapter 15. Creating a tiering storage class

Use the Dashboard to create a tiering storage class for local storage, Cloud S3, or Cloud S3 Glacier targets.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure that you have the following prerequisites in place:

  • You have administrator privileges to access the Ceph Dashboard.
  • The Object Gateway service is running.
  • You have the access key and secret key for the target storage system.

Procedure

  1. Go to Dashboard > Object > Tiering.
  2. Click Create.
  3. In the Create Tiering Storage dialog, select the storage type:

    • Local
    • Cloud S3
    • Cloud S3 Glacier
  4. Enter the required details:

    • Name – Unique name for the storage class.
    • Target Region – Region of the storage endpoint.
    • Target Endpoint– URL endpoint of the remote cloud object storage service where Ceph transitions objects. Use this parameter to define the destination endpoint for data movement to an external S3-compatible cloud, such as AWS S3 or S3 Glacier. The value must include the protocol, host, and optional port number.
    • Access key and Secret key – Credentials for the target storage.
    • Target Path – Path in the target storage.
  5. Specify Read Through Restore Days.
  6. Select one of the restore options:

    • Allow read through (default restore behavior)
    • Head object (Stub file)
  7. Select the Restore Storage Class from the dropdown list.
  8. Select the Glacier Restore Type.
  9. Expand the Advanced pane and configure the optional parameters:

    • Multipart Sync Threshold – Object size that triggers multipart upload.
    • Multipart Minimum Part Size – Minimum size of each part.
    • Placement Target - Placement configuration that defines where transitioned objects are stored within a zonegroup. The placement target maps a storage class to a specific storage tier or cloud destination, ensuring objects are directed to the correct backend during transition.
    • ACL Mapping- Defines how access control list (ACL) entries from the source Ceph zone are translated to the destination cloud service. Use this parameter to maintain user or group permissions when objects transition to a cloud tier.
  10. Click Create to save the tiering storage class.
  11. Result The new tiering storage class appears under Dashboard > Object > Tiering.
