Getting started with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization

Red Hat® OpenShift® Virtualization allows users to run virtual machines (VMs) alongside containers on the same platform. Learn how to create, deploy, and migrate different VMs on a single platform.

This learning path is for operations teams or system administrators

Installing the Red Hat OpenShift Operator for Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization

20 mins

Red Hat® OpenShift® Virtualization can be run through the Red Hat web console, but you need to install the OpenShift Operator to start. Once the operator is in place, the web console will have several virtualization features that allow users to view a catalog of deployable virtual machines, oversee their own VMs, and much more.

What will you learn?

  • How to install OpenShift Operator
  • How to install HyperConverged

What you need before starting:

Installing the OpenShift Operator:

This video is a visual walkthrough of the steps below. It does reference the use of Amazon Web Services, but it is not necessary for Operator configuration. To view this video with an attached transcript, please go to this page.

  1. Click on the Operators dropdown in the navigation menu.
  2. Select OperatorHub from the available options.
  3. Type “OpenShift Virtualization” in the search bar, the operator should show in the search results.
  4. Click on OpenShift Virtualization, then click Install within the modal that appears.
  5. Ensure that the following settings are selected:
    • Update channel - stable
    • Installation mode - A specific namespace on the cluster
    • Installed namespace - Operator recommended Namespace
      • It is recommended to use the automated suggestion from the tool.
    • Update approval - Automatic
  6. Click Install.
  7. A modal will appear while the operator installs. This may take several minutes.
  8. Once the installation is complete, click Create HyperConverged in the lower left of the modal. This will create the deployment of OpenShift Virtualization.
  9. In the HyperConverged page that appears, leave all default options selected and click Create at the bottom of the page.
  10. A new loading screen will appear giving the status of the HyperConverged installation progress. This may take several minutes.
  11. As the installation progresses, a pop-up will appear indicating a new version of web console is available. Click Refresh web console to reload the page (this will not affect the install progress).
  12. Once the page is reloaded, a new Virtualization option will become available in the left hand navigation menu.

Once the installation is complete, there will be a number of virtualization options available including templates, virtual machine overviews, a catalog of deployable machines, and more that we’ll dive into in the next step.
