Chapter 7. Fast Datapath
Fast Datapath (FDP) is a Red Hat capability that enhances packet processing to deliver high-throughput, low-latency networking for performance-critical workloads such as telecommunications, high-frequency trading, and real-time analytics. Red Hat delivers FDP across Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Red Hat OpenStack Platform (RHOSP), and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (RHOCP).
FDP supports a range of technologies, including SR-IOV (Single Root I/O Virtualization), DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit), OVS kernel (Open vSwitch using the kernel datapath), OVS-DPDK (Open vSwitch with DPDK), and OVS offload (Open vSwitch Offload), which allow direct hardware access and bypass the traditional kernel networking stack for reduced latency.
FDP certification is currently available by invitation only. Red Hat conducts additional testing in close collaboration with its networking team.
Each Red Hat product integrates FDP differently:
- RHEL: Delivers core technologies such as DPDK and SR-IOV through the FDP channel.
- RHOSP: Supports SR-IOV, OVS-DPDK, and OVS Offload. Red Hat regularly integrates FDP content during the Full Support phase of Long Life releases.
- RHOCP: Includes support for SR-IOV and OVS. Each minor release evaluates the latest FDP stream for inclusion.
- RHV: Picks up the latest FDP stream at each annual release, supporting technologies like SR-IOV and OVS (kernel).
